I am a freshmen going on sophomore in high school in Illinois who wants to become a doctor.?

What steps should i take from my current position to become one? In my freshmen year I had average grades in above average classes (honors and sophomore classes). I know I could of done better and feel like I made the mistake of letting high school influences distract me. This year I am trying to correct my mistakes and get on the right path to become a doctor and get into medical school. I have looked around the internet and everyone says to study and I realize I need to do that and start to look into science.So I was wondering what other steps(please be descriptive or specific) or programs(in Illinois) do you think I should take part in to help me reach my goals. Also are there any books or websites anyone recommends for me to look at? Thank you and please feel free to state your opinions or share your experiences. I will appreciate anything you have to say.
